Return of The Geek Bugs Bunny

The Geek like most of us, when through a time when his adult front teeth looked rather huge in a small child’s mouth, rather reminiscent of Bugs Bunny. The only problem was that The Geek though it would be funny to over exaggerate the prominence of his teeth by tucking his bottom lip under them, and thus immortalizing this rather unfortunate look in his school picture. Now if only we had a scanner… no shame I am really not that mean, hmm I am sure I could take a picture with my cell phone. ( No Pinky, bad Pinky, step away from the photo album)

Years later and of course The gorgeous Geek has grown into his teeth and that rather dorky boy is long forgotten. I think he is worried that I am trying to bring about the return of the said Bugs Bunny look with the new food that I am inflicting on him. We already do MeatFree Monday, although truth be told it is not always Monday, that depends how organised I am, and if I remember, but we do at least 1 vegetarian meal a week if not more. But things were about to get worse for The Geek, a die hard meat lover, like most South African men.

He has agreed that we need to eat ethical meat and that we need to be mindful of where our food comes from but he still would really like it if I would stop trying to mess with his meat ๐Ÿ˜‰

Part of the sustainability project is to reduce our electricity cost and reliance on fossil fuels. So I had a brilliant idea, I have a raw food cook book and while we will never change to a totally raw diet. If we add one day a week that we do not cook the food we lessen our carbon usage for that day in the electricity saved and also by not having meat we save the environmental damage that comes along with mass farming of livestock.

So last night was our first raw Bugs-Bunny-Food meal and I think I might have surprised the family, it was not as bad as they expected.

It was a salad, each person had their own salad in a lettuce leaf. I added tomatoe (except for Rachel) beans, cucumber, yellow pepper, apple, naartjies, sprouted chickpeas and a little biltong – yes I know not totally free of meat like I want but I had to start slowly and win them over to the idea of raw food each week. And technically the biltong is raw.

I then added a dollop of spinach ( wilted for a few minutes with salt and then rinsed and mixed with a cashew nut cream I made by blending raw cashew nuts, water, honey, salt and a very small piece of onion) I topped this with various seeds and cranberries. It was so yummy even the Pinklets loved it. Caleb loves spinach and said it was the best spinach he ever had

Pinklets enjoying their salad

I have a raw food book called Rawlicious by Peter and Beryn Daniel they have a company Superfoods I find the book very helpful but it is written more for those making a total change over and a lot of meals require a dehydrator which I don’t have and I guess if I am doing the raw food to save electricity using a dehydrator might negate the benefit so for the moment it is mostly salads and other raw ideas I can find that don’t need a dehydrator.

The next step is to make a solar oven

Could you eat raw once a week?

Can you save?

On Thursday it was world water day. I did not forget, I was just needing to talk about tiara’s

Someone on twitter had a great idea for getting The Geek to like a tiara, wear it with lingerie and a beer in each hand, a few times of this and he should be conditioned to love it.

Since we started our sustainability project we have wanted to save water. As the #closethetap campaign on twitter says, by making small adjustments to your everyday life, you can reduce water wastage and help us to create awareness around the litres of water we literally pour down the drain each day.

This is what we have done so far:

As much as we would love to have a whole grey water system in place it is a bit expensive at the moment so we have tried to find things that we can do to save water and still be able to use what we need in the garden to grow our vegetables.

– I have a bucket in the shower that collects the extra water as I shower. It can’t collect it all but depending how long I take in the shower I can collect between 10 – 20 Litres per shower. If I wash my hair it is closer to 20L if I just jump in and wash and jump out then it is more like 10L, I use this water on the plants and saving having to use the tap. I have changed to Earth Friendly products from African Organics so even as I rinse if it goes into the bucket it is okay. Even if you don’t have these and are worried about your regular products on the plants just rinse them away from the bucket but collect the other water as you shower.

Turn off the tap in the shower, this is another option, you can get in and get wet and then turn of the tap, do all your soaping and washing with no water running and then just turn on the water again to rinse. This seems like more of a summer option but I am willing to try even in winter.

Skip a day of showering, at least once or twice a week I try not to have a full wash in the shower. And no I don’t just go smelly. I run a basin of water and use a cloth and do a basin wash. Of course it is not as clean as a shower but then I am not running around getting all that dirty and so every so often I don’t think it is bad, especially on days when I don’t need to wash my hair.

Use bath water from kids bath to fill the nappy bucket to soak the nappies. Again 20L fresh water saved

– If it is yellow let it mellow is pretty standard now in our house. Although the boys do most wees outside. I do go outside with my SheWee or I use an empty coffee jar and collect the urine and put it on the compost heap as a compost activator and a way to save the nutrients and add them to the garden later. How and why to put urine on your garden here

We would love to have a big rainwater collection drum but they are a bit pricey so for now we found a link on how to build your own rainwater collection which the boys built last weekend. It was perfect timing as it rained on Sunday night.

So what have you done to save water?
What can you do?

One small change from each of us have a ripple effect

I want a tiara

Thanks for all who commented on the date setting post. I also think yesterday would have been a great day. I used Tanya’s advice and asked The Geek if we could set a time when we could discuss the date. He was fine and asked if I was free for discussions half and hour later.

So it will be February next year we had 2 dates to choose between and The Geek went for the one that is all prime numbers – got to love him. He wanted to wait so we had more time and more money and the weather is the best in February for an outside wedding, the least chance of rain, even if it is a bit hot.

We are going to be doing it all ourselves and it will be very non traditional but I want a tiara. And not for any other reason than The Big Bang Theory. The Geek and I love that show and I laughed so much at Amy’s tiara scene, I can watch it a million times and still laugh. So I want one, The Geek is less keen.

I can’t seem to get the YouTube link to work, maybe The Geek can help tonight

The Date Dilemma

I might have stopped The Geek stalling on the proposal but setting the date is another story. Everyone asks me if we have set a date yet. ( please ask The Geek too so he feels some of the pressure)

Let me explain Pinky and The Geek a bit to you, and why the date is turning into a bit of a drama

I am impatient, once I know or need to do something I want to throw myself into it and get started and make it happen. Let me give you an example.

I would have gotten married this coming Wednesday the public holiday, which would have been 3 weeks after the proposal. It made perfect sense, my sister was still here from England, Ghilraen would have been able to combine a trip she need to do to CT, Catherine would still be in Cape Town, the weather is still good and what better way to not spend too much money than just not have enough time to spend it ๐Ÿ˜‰ and being a public holiday our anniversary would always have been a holiday. SO you see I am hasty and often impulsive and can make just about anything sound like a good idea. But no one would have slept and we all would have been very cranky and rushed.

The Geek
The Geek is infinitely patient. He is sure that 2014 well if he is honest 2015 sounds like a good time. I try not to feel too hurt and take it as a sign that he is reluctant or dragging his feet, no The Geek is more complicated than that. He needs things to be perfect he likes to plan things and not to rush. He also hates feeling like he is doing things to other peoples agenda so the more people ask the less inclined he is to set a date. So while making sure that stuff is right is a good quality it can also lead to never doing anything because it is not the perfect time.

All this has a rather disastrous effect on Pinky who hates not knowing, even if it is not going to be on Wednesday ( yes I realize it would have been a bit silly) and even if it is later than I would have liked, I function better if I just have something to work towards. But the more I try just sit down and discuss it the more The Geek evades the topic so the more I try another chance to talk about it and after 5 or so of these conversations that go no where the Geek is feeling pressured and I am feel avoided and hurt so I get more anxious just to get it done and he gets more determined to wait even longer.

*Le Sigh* I think Pinky and The Geek have some lessons to learn. This is what marriage is really about after all, learning to understand why the other person acts the way the do and try to find a middle ground that works for you both.

I am going to carry on Pinning things and hopefully getting more ideas and I am going to not talk about it to The Geek anymore. I am going to try do this without any hurt feelings or sulking – no promises but I will try.

The Geek is finishing his degree and so is studying and I have to be mindful that he can’t really think of anything else at the moment and it will be a huge burden off us all when he is finished.

When you decided to get married how did you decide on the date?

Greener Baby

I wrote an article for Parent 24 a while back Saving the Planet, don’t have more kids This was before I met Yme and Titus graced us with his presents. I mentioned that I was not saying don’t to have kids or even that I would not have any more, but the question was should we consider the environment when deciding to have children.

I think there are ways to have kids without having a huge impact on the environment. I want to highlight some of these over the next few weeks. I was going to do a baby week but I thought even I might be sick of baby talk by the end of that so I will intersperse the baby stuff into the general life news.

My first tip is on clothing
Kids grow so fast and one of the great expense is keeping them clothed. Titus fondly known as ‘bundle of puke’ when he was younger would go through quite a few changes of clothes a day. One of the best ways to decrease the environmental impact is to use pre loved clothes and pass on the clothes that your kids have out grown. I know not everyone likes hand-me-downs but they make economic and plant saving sense.

I am always very grateful for stuff that has been passed on to us and I notice that some offer it hesitatingly though, I guess not all people are as welcoming when it comes to 2nd hand clothes. I in turn pass mine on with enthusiasm, so if I offend you offering you our hand-me-downs please forgive me I am just trying to save the planet.

We can’t always just get away with 2nd hand things so what about the times when you want to add that something special or you need something for your kids. Honey Badger Eco Friendly clothing fills this gap very well.

Look out for the full blog article on Honey Badger Clothing but in the mean time I just want to let you know of the special offer they are running for Pink Hair Girl readers. On their Facebook page they have an album of pictures of clothes less 25% for you including fitted sheets. Postage NOT included, while stock lasts, offer runs until the end of March. Their shopping trolley is down but you can contact Renee on the FB page about items you are interested in.

I am definitely going to get the kids a few more things. I was lucky enough to get a voucher for Honey Badger Clothing in an authors gift pack and have been very impressed with the clothes we got. And now you can OOOHHH and AAAHHH over how cute Titus was in October in his Honey Badger Clothes and sweet hat

It is official I am a chicken farmer

It was my baby sisters wedding this weekend and my dad did a father of the bride speech and amongst other things he humorously introduced the family to my sisters new husband ( we of course have known him for years) He said I was the one that was hard to miss, and that I trained as a nurse and was now a writer and chicken farmer ๐Ÿ˜‰

this is my pretty frock and the shawl I knitted

I thought since I was a chicken farmer I would introduce my flock

This is Potter (sitting) and Lilly, they are the only ones of the original chickens that we got at the church bazaar that started the chicken farming and in fact these are the ones that our friends got and not ours as all of ours turned out to be roosters. They are enormous and affectionately known in our house as The Fatties.

Potter has purple on her as she was the chicken we were saving the other day and I am pleased to say that despite the vets doom and gloom, the chicken forums predictions won out and Potter made a full recovery, the purple spray just has to grow out with her next molt

Next we got Jack Hen which you know about, she was the first of our chickens to require the Pinky and Geek vetinary clinic services when she got a prolapse and was the model for the felt chicken. She was recently broody and I tried to get eggs for her to sit on (ours are not fertilized as we have no rooster) and she was a great mommy, but The Fatties kept trying to lay in the same nesting box and crushing her eggs with their gargantuan size. After 23 days (eggs are supposed to hatch after 21 days) I took her off the nest. She can get sick if she sits for too long as they don’t eat or drink much in that time. There were 4 of the original 10 eggs left and I was going to candle them, a method of trying with a light source to see if a chick is growing, so The Geek took the eggs out in a towel and left them inside…

There is always drama, and of course Moby the delinquent dog stole them and ate them (insert puke face) so I never did get to see if the eggs had even started to form. I am not even sure they were fertilized, next time I have a better source to get eggs from if I have a broody hen and I will keep the Broody separate, so The Fatties can’t disturb her. Jack Hen does not seem too worried about the lack of babies, she spent the day eating and wandering around the garden after 21 days of hardly leaving the nest. Next time I will do better for her or whoever else goes broody.

Next we got The Babies. A friend Jo had a broody hen and she sat and hatched 3 babies but Jo could not keep more chickens in her smaller garden so she asked if I would like them. They were 6 weeks old when we got them and are now out in the main flock and doing very well. I think these two are girls

and I am guessing this is a boy, I am hoping to keep him, I want a Rooster to fertilize our own eggs but it may mean I have to get his vocal cords severed – is that mean? I say that any creature would rather be alive than in the pot and The Geek says removing a Rooster ability to crow will make it sad. So not sure what we are going to do if he is a boy. And because we did not know what sex these were and if they were male or more than 1 was a male they were destined for the pot the kids have not been allowed to name them. I am yet to see if we can actually get over the we-don’t-eat-our-chickens hurdle

Next we got a beautiful red hen. She arrived with the name Princess but that was not deemed to be enough so we call her Laya ( Princess Laya from Star Wars and she Lays eggs ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) I really like her but she is very noisy – the reason she was re-homed was she was driving a friend mad with her clucking.

Then Jo contacted me, when she put her Mommy Hen back in with the other hens after she had the afore mentioned babies they were mean and pecked her severely on the head until she had to be removed for her own safety. Jo asked if I would take the Mommy as it was not safe for her in her own flock any more. Hence we got Mommy hen. I thought she might like to go in with the Babies as they were her babies and then slowly as she felt better integrate with the flock ( the babies were separate at this point) but No… more drama

Mommy does not welcome her little babies under her wings, fussing and clucking over them saying “my, how you have grown” and ” Are they treating you okay here?” No, what does she do? She rushes over and pecks them! She attacked them, my kids start screeching and getting most irate and finally we have to remove Mommy and check no babies got injured.

She then proceeded to try peck everyone else in the flock. I think where she came from obviously there was a very strong pecking order and you had to assert your dominance or die. While my ‘hippy’ flock as Jo has since named them, all love each other, accept new chickens easily and don’t pick on each other. The Fatties might be big but they are sweet natured and Laya is noisy by timid. Jack Hen is also very calm and does not pick on others.

I was very worried that if Mommy hen carried on picking on others I would have to get rid of her but thankfully the ‘hippy’ vibe of our garden seems to have mellowed her out and she is not attacking anyone any more and her head is almost totally healed.

So that is our flock and the reason my dad affectionately named me a chicken farmer

Leap year proposal

The Geek and I have talked a lot about getting married. He says things like “you know I want to marry you” to which I usually reply “apparently”

The Geek analyzes, researches and waits until he feels everything is perfect before he does things. This means it takes a long time. Especially something like a proposal.

With 3 kids and a tight budget there is never enough money and the idea of a wedding gets put on the back burner.

I on the other hand am impulsive and impatient. I am bad at waiting. Being a leap year I decided to propose.

Actually I had a thought how I would do it and the told a friend who was so enthusiastic it was contagious, so I threw caution to the wind and emailed 6 friends on Twitter to help.

Why Twitter, because we met on Twitter and Titus’s birth was Tweeted and we met a lot of good friends on Twitter.

Each person had one word to tweet to The Geek 5 minutes apart starting at 4:00 ending at 4:30 when he finishes work. I would do the last tweet outside his office.

I was so nervous. Not that he would say no, but that he would be mad that he did not get to have his romantic moment. I even emailed his brother to check if he knew of any imminent plans, if he would have told anyone he would have told his brother. Jacques did not know of any plans, he said his brother procrastinates and to go for it. He even baby sat Titus.

The older 2 were on the farm with Carle for a sleep over. I dropped all the kids and started watching my phone. I was so nervous it would not work or someone would be delayed. But they were all amazing. A huge thank you to Carle, Sharon, Andre, Paul, Annatjie and Catherine

I did warn him to look at his Twitter from 4 as I know sometimes he gets too busy.
This is what his timeline looked like.

He came out the office he looked so confused. He was grinning and he gave me a kiss and said yes. I was shaking I was so nervous.

When I said I was worried he would be mad he said of course he was not mad, and although he had a few vague ideas in his mind he had no fixed plans.

We went straight to the beach for a photo shoot with Catherine from Cazpix and then out to dinner. It was lovely.

the rest of the photo shoot is here
