My story

When I blogged the 6 word challenge, I mentioned that what had inspired it was a writing competition. I sent in an entry, but never put the link to my story in my blog as I was very unsure of myself. You could have found it if you looked for my name in the list but I did not want to highlight it.  As much as I love writing, I have not written any non-fiction since I left school, rather a long time ago. I love words though and often feel like I write because I have to, the words just want to come out.

So this is my story, that I entered:

Guardian’s Gift
By Sally-Jane Cameron

The solitary figure stands silhouetted on the grey hilltop, the other mourners are long gone. A dark bird circles overhead, it’s cry piercing. She draws her cloak tighter around her, but feels the icy wind leech the last remaining warmth from her. The fire in her soul had been extinguished the night she held his head in her lap. Her guardian, protector and guide had raged against the dying to remain with her, but the dark ominous presence in the room had won, claimed it’s prize and taken her champion.

She feels her legs begin to crumple, her eyes closing, she welcomes the thud of the cold earth, the never getting up again, but arms catch her, strong arms she knows and trusts. Warmth slowly spreads through her body, calm washes over her, the kind she felt when he was by her side. Her heart pounds, “He has returned!” But opening her eyes, she’s alone…The pain is is still there, but she feels his final gift reach into her soul, and gently start to fan the embers of her spirit.

She feels his unwavering love and devotion to her, and grieves the one gift she had never been able to give to him; she the princess, and him, her guardian. Rank had fated him to love her completely but watch while she loved others. She will not fail him! Her strength gathers through the pain. She stands, determined to make him proud; the battle for her kingdom will be won!

I knew I would never win, but it felt good to write again, it was only after I had sent in my entry that I began to read more about short story stuff and the idea is to not switch between past and present and just describe a scene. So I was even more sure that I would not do so well.

But when the judging came up I was surprised to see that I had made the Forties Club which means:

Entries scoring at least 40 out of 45 in my scoring system are inducted into The Forties Club. Asterisks have been added next to the names of inductees. In my judgment, these writers have done their job excellently. Their strong, skilled writing brought their stories to life.
He explains more about the judging here:
this is the link to the winners

My 250 word entry is actually the idea I had for the start of a book, maybe I will write it one day…

The things Caleb says

Caleb is now 2½ and says and does the funniest things so I thought I would share a few

– My mom took him to the toilet and he said to her : “This penis is not working, I need to jiggle it”

– I often ask Rachel if she will do me a favour and help me get stuff or do something for me, Caleb now asks just about everyone ‘Mommy/Granny/Bumpa/Christina/Rachel/Marc ( insert required name) can you do me a favour?’ and then he says nothing after that.

– me: Caleb what are you doing Caleb: singing to my penis

– “Rachel is annoying me”

– if you close your eyes and pretend to sleep he says cock-a-doodle-do until you wake up, he also pretends to snore

– ‘MOM can I zerbit your tummy?’ he loves to stroke and make big noisy zerbits on my tummy, then he kills himself laughing.

– he says B for V so movies = mobies, TV = TB DVD = DBD heavy = heaby etc it is cute

– He can count to 12, green is his favourite colour and he loves to eat olibes (olives)

– If anything breaks he tells you he will get his screwdriber (driver) and fix it

– but he also tells me I am beautiful and he hugs me and says ” Mommy I luff you” and I melt

“Angels are the guardians of hope and wonder, the keepers of magic and dreams. Wherever there is love, an angel is flying by. Your guardian angel knows you inside and out, and loves you just the way you are. Angels keep it simple and always travel light. Remember to leave space in your relationships so the angels have room to play. Your guardian angel helps you find a place when you feel there is no place to go. Whenever you feel lonely, a special angel drops in for tea. Angels are with you every step of the way and help you soar with amazing grace. After all, we are angels in training; all we have to do is spread our wings and fly!” Author Unknown

One day when I am big

The blog challenge on Female to Female today is about your favourite city, either the one you live in or the one that you want to live in. Now it is no secret that I love Cape Town and that my goal is to move there. My parents are originally from Cape Town and we have been visiting since I was a little girl. I love it, there is just something about me that feels at home in CT. From the mountains to the sea Cape Town has memories both old and new for me.

One day I really hope I get to live the dream.

Cape Town

Now all that said I really really love Pretoria, and yes laugh all you like but until you have lived here you can’t understand that it is actually not a bad place to live. The weather, in my humble opinion is the best in South Africa. Laura explains it well in Female to Female

Thanks to André for the picture

One for the boys

Barbara was telling me about a discussion on a parenting forum, they were discussing what guys would choose if they had the choice between sex with no blowjobs or blowjobs and no sex, forever. The responses were interesting, we thought it might be revealing to see what guys think as the original discussion was mostly women.

Guys please vote in the poll and I would love to hear what people think ( yes you girls too) so leave me a comment.

Laura has a Photo Blog Challenge on Female 2 Female

I needed to post a picture of something yellow
yellow bed,f2f

I decided on Rachel’s yellow duvet as she has come back to loving the colour again. It was always her favourite from when she was a small girl. As she started to interact with other little girls she discovered that ‘the’ colour girls were supposed to like was pink and so for a while pink and purple were the favourites. In a way it made me really sad. I like that she was individual and chose a colour that she liked rather than was just popular. Yes I know I like pink but that is different, I like it in an unusual pink hair kind of way. If she had started off liking pink that would have been fine, I just hated to see her natural preference changed to fit in – I guess we all do it to a certain extent. I am happy that yellow is back!

What should you risk for love

I have been avoiding writing this post for a while. Something happens when you have a blog, everything becomes a potential blog post and this idea has popped into my head a few times when talking to friends over the past few months. I kept putting it off thinking that when I had something profound to say I would be able to do the topic justice, but the epiphany never came. The problem with this topic is that it can seem so cliché to just say “hell yes, you risk all for love.”

Last night on twitter a few of the girls were talking about the movie City of Angels (possible spoiler, so don’t read further if you have not seen the movie and still want to) and it got me thinking again about how much should we risk for love. I cried in that movie, they found that love, the one we all look for and then just like that it was gone, should he have risked so much for such a short time? Can love be measured in time, or rather in how it makes your heart feel and your soul sing?

I asked the question on twitter about what we should risk for love and the answers varied from everything to nothing. But the one reply that got me thinking was Lisa Troy’s answer : “The problem isn’t what we risk for love it’s that we risk for the illusion the other person offers us. That’s the tragedy.”

There is some truth in this, we often look to others to offer us the dream, the happiness we seek, but this has the potential for disaster. I don’t think another person should be responsible for your happiness, they should add to it. I believe that real love, where the person is enough as they are and all you have to be is yourself, is worth risking a lot for.

For me as someone who has always been a bit cynical and skeptical of love, the biggest risk is in the loving itself. We don’t use the word ‘falling’ in love for nothing, there is a process of abandonment of rational thought that is needed to fall, a loss of control is implied. This can be blindly terrifying as the outcome no matter how sure you were when you took the leap is always to a degree uncertain. But wow that falling feeling is great!

So what do you think, what should you risk for love?

Pix from the Canonista

Hello gentle reader. No, this is NOT PinkHairGirl…:)

I’m a friend, and I asked PGH to allow me to guest-post here…

Why, you ask?
Well, she showed me some pics she was taking, to see what Caleb was doing, and the images immediately struck me as special. I know shooters who try for years and charge small fortunes to get results like this.

Now let me try and describe what I’m seeing, objectively.
There are elements of lighting and composition and emotion in these images that are exceptional. See how he’s in the light? See how he IS the light in the dark-edged room? See how he’s the centre, focus and really the only subject in the image? See how the colour elements brighten without taking attention away from him? See how he has engaged with the viewer, over the ‘spider’? See the perfect gentle window light?

She doesn’t believe me. So help me, please. You be the judges.

6 word challenge

Words. I love words I saw this competition on Angel’s blog, the closing date is tonight. I have wanted to write a story for ages, in fact I have one in my head. So I decided to write the opening for my story for the competition. You only have 250 words which is really hard. I have not written fiction since I was at school so this was quite a challenge, mostly to get over my own anxiety and fear of not be fantastic straight away. I was tempted to just write a poem instead but decided to take the challenge rather. Oh well will send something in, not sure I am brave enough to post it here.

I was talking to my mom about the competition and she told me about a story in 6 words

Ernest Hemmingway was challenged to write a story in 6 words, his answer which he personally thought was his best pose ever was “For sale: baby shoes, never used”

Can you write a story in 6 words? Try and leave it in the comments.

Show me your Tat!

I got my first Tattoo a few weeks ago and am totally in love with it. Quite a few of you commented on your own tattoos, so now I am curious I want to see them. Please share what you have where and why. Send the pics to and I will add them here.

If you don’t have one but are thinking of it or have an idea, please feel free to share that too.

This is mine a Guardian Angel Ankh
ankh,tattoo,guardian angel

So here are the tattoos that you guys have been sharing:

The tattoo is three Kanji symbols in a modern font.

It’s over my heart, cos that’s where it binds me.
It means I will never break the promise I made.
It is unconditional and unbreakable.

It’s the Horde symbol from World Of Warcraft.

This is my tattoo of 2 geckos in a yin-yang design. I had it done in Thailand to celebrate my 30th birthday.

I got the first part of the tat (the main flower at the bottom) for my 21st birthday and didnt add anything else until early 2009…
The main ‘flower’ at the bottom was part of the original tat and represents me, the inside is a styalised ‘G’
I added two more flowers one representing Paul and one for Aaron.
I am going to add more when I have more kids.
I also want to go back and have some colour put in, like a burst of different colour from behind each flower…

An amazing guy that i grew up with was killed in a car accident nearly 2 years ago. on the first anniversary of his death i got this tattoo. we’re both gemini’s (born hours apart!!), hence the symbol. inside it are his initials and underneath his birth and death year.

Mischievous face in the middle of the sun, fits well with the
Sagitarius personality

I made a combination of 2
designs I found, Kanji writing means “Never Give Up”, my motto in

The ones on my back r kind of a tribute to my guitar and hence my music, I play a Gibson hummingbird and the scratchplate has a bird and vines and flowers, gonna get a butterfly added someday. Then the quote in the lower back section says “hope will not disappoint” which is a Godly concept which is stating that if hope comes from the right place, it won’t disappoint u. The SLG on the lower back tat was my 1st tattoo that I got when I was 19, it’s the initials of a song by Tori Amos called “strange little girl”, I added the vines and flowers later, that’s why it looks a little out of place.

The one on my wrist of the cross that says “In Your freedom I will live” is kind of depicting Jesus as a revolutionary and a freedom fighter, hence the red star in the middle.
