Over to you

I have had a few discussions with people since I posted my 101 books to read post. Everyone has books they think should be on the list so I am throwing this post over to you guys, what would you include that was not on the list? It does not have to be of great literary genius status but anything that touched you and you think is worth a mention. I am keen to see what books have made an impression on people.

One that springs to mind for me is Four Letter of Love – Niall Williams, strangely enough I am reading another one by him now and although as beautifully written I am finding it harder to get into.

So tell me your recommendations

  1. Act Like a Lady, Think like a Man – Steve Harvey
Not great literature by anyone’s standards. However it was enlightening beyond all expectations and a most entertaining read.

A Voice in the Wind (trilogy) – Francine Rivers
Fiction based on Biblical History. I’m not sure how much “truth” is in these books. However, even if read from the point of view they are purely fictional fantasy, they are an inspiring, uplifting and encouraging read. Highly recommended in my humble opinion.

  2. Such a personal thing, but for long human stories, any of Wally Lamb’s three books are great- real dialogue you can relate to. For thrillers, James Lee Burke writes brilliantly; descriptive and gripping explorations of the darkness of the criminal and the sociopathic minds.
One of the most difficult books to define is Skallagrigg, by William Horwood, a mixture of tragedy and transcendence. You aren’t quite sure what is real and what isn’t. A magical book. All have provoked me after the book is finished. I think most people would enjoy them, too.

  3. Sharon the Lion Trilogy are my all time favourite books, i actually bought them to pass on to everyone I know to read- LOVE them so I will ditto you there

  4. 1.The entire Discworld series by Terry Pratchett
    2. The Hounds of the Morrigan by Pat O’Shea
    3. Everything by Daleen Mathee, preferably in the original Afrikaans
    4. The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
    5. Another Roadside Attraction – Tom Robbins
    6. Even Cowgirls Get the Blues – Tom Robbins
    7. Skinny Legs and All – Tom Robbins
    8. Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas – Tom Robbins
    9. Jitterbug Perfume – Tom Robbins

And that should keep you busy for a while… Absolutely LOVE the Discworld series, though. Seriously, check it out!
