Felting Fish Friends

These cute little knitted fish made with a felting yarn. Great gifts for kids, as they wash the fish friend will felt and make a solid little fish toy.

Materials:
– Elle Felting yarn or equivalent
– 5.5mm circular needles
– Bar of soap – I used an organic goats milk soap
– Darning needle

Abbreviations:
Kfb: Increase by Knit forward and back of the stitch
k: knit
p:purl
k2tog: knit 2 together

Pattern:
Cast on 8 stitches and join in the round being careful not to twist the stitches
Row 1: kfb into all the stitches (16 stitches)
Row 2 and all even rows Knit around
Row 3: K2 kfb k3 kfb k3 kfb k3 kfb k1 (20 stitches)
Row 5: k2 kfb k5 kfb k3 kfb k5 kfb k1 (24 stitches)
Row 7: k2 kfb k7 kfb k3 kfb k7 kfb k1 (28 Stitches)
Row 9: k2 kfb k9 kfb k3 kfb k9 kfb k1 (32 stitches)
knit 11 rows (you can add colour bands to the fish if you like, twist the yarn at the end of each row and carry the yarn up as you go as you will add the soap and then close the fish so this minimizes ends that need to be sewn in)
begin decrease
Row 21: k2 k2tog k9 k2tog k3 k2tog k9 k2tog k1 (28 Stitches)
Row 22 and even rows are still knit around
Row 23: K2 k2tog k7 k2tog k3 k2tog k7 k2tog k1 (24 stitches)
Keep an eye on the opening for the soap and add it before the decrease is too small for it to fit into the fish, it is a little tricky to knit with the soap inside the fish but not impossible

Row 25: k2 k2tog k5 k2tog k3 k2tog k5 k2tog k1 (20 stitches)
Row 27: k2 k2tog k3 k2tog k3 k2tog k3 k2tog k1 (16 stitches)
Row 28: k2tog around (8 stitches)
Row 29: kfb around (16 stitches)
Row 30: kfb around (32 stitches)
Row 31-38 Knit around
cast off loosely and sew cast off edge together
weave in any loose ends and your felting fish friend is ready.
