Such a personal thing, but for long human stories, any of Wally Lamb's three books are great- real dialogue you can relate to. For thrillers, James Lee Burke writes brilliantly; descriptive and gripping explorations of the darkness of the criminal and the sociopathic minds.
One of the most difficult books to define is Skallagrigg, by William Horwood, a mixture of tragedy and transcendence. You aren't quite sure what is real and what isn't. A magical book. All have provoked me after the book is finished. I think most people would enjoy them, too.

Act Like a Lady, Think like a Man - Steve Harvey
Not great literature by anyone's standards. However it was enlightening beyond all expectations and a most entertaining read.

A Voice in the Wind (trilogy) - Francine Rivers
Fiction based on Biblical History. I'm not sure how much "truth" is in these books. However, even if read from the point of view they are purely fictional fantasy, they are an inspiring, uplifting and encouraging read. Highly recommended in my humble opinion.
